upcoming! women & the wind: independent movie screening

The ocean runs deep through my veins in more ways than one. It connects me with loved ones, with work colleagues, with creators that make this space, Bloom, what it is. The ocean runs through all our veins. Here, by the coast, it is a constant in our everyday: its scent lingers in the air, its salt rides on the rain, we eat from it, we sail it and bathe in it, we use it and abuse it, too.

Under the Landsbyen project, we bring to you the documentary Women & the Wind. This is an independent production that follows a group of women set off across the North Atlantic in 2022 to follow plastic pollution on its ride to Europe via the Gulf Stream. Throughout the entirety of the voyage, larger floating debris including fishing nets, buckets, bottles, plastic bags, and nylon ropes were constant companions. Though the initial intention of the film was to focus mainly on telling this story of plastic, the voyage took on a much more personal tone as the days progressed.

After the screening, we will also host an open and kind conversation about the ways in which the documentary resonates with our own lives, values, and communities.

The trans-Atlantic voyage was captured through the eyes and lens of filmmaker Alizé Jireh. Throughout 30 days of calms, storms, setbacks, and unimaginable scenery, Alizé’s camera kept rolling. The aesthetic of the film will provoke a deep emotional reaction, as the viewer is presented with the intensity of the voyage, and the ocean. The ever-changing state of the sea, in all its splendour, and duality—shifting between gentleness and rage—reflects our own humanity and opens us to contemplation on our relationship with the most unknown parts of ourselves and the planet.
