Some of you have asked me about my Audubon bird call, which I wore on a string around my neck when we went for a walk together. Well, to be completely honest, I had borrowed it from my kids. We have two at home, one for each child. We all love it and we all are into bird watching even if just out our kitchen window. By the way, people also walk around and count bird species; a simple but powerful way for volunteers to help scientists track bird populations and migration patterns, in support of conservation efforts.

This is the original Audubon bird call. It has a sturdy cast zinc and solid birch construction. The bird call's sound is produced by rotating the wooden cylinder against the cast zinc plug. By varying the pressure between the two surfaces while twisting back and forth, a variety of bird sounds can be accurately imitated. It takes a bit of practice to reach the desired sound, but it takes no practice to already make fun bird call-like sounds. Originally conceived by songbird hunters in Italy, the bird call attracts birds by creating the impression that other birds are in the area.

Wear it in your pocket or on a string around your neck. I bet people will ask, because it is so simply cool! I also personally find it a great de-stressor if you need that extra.

A rosin capsule included to maintain the call’s distinctive chirp. To apply, carefully open the capsule and sprinkle a small amount of the pine rosin powder into the small hole where the birchwood cylinder meets the zinc plug; this powder provides grip for the wood-on-metal friction, making the call squeak. Reapply periodically to maintain its sound as the call gets used or if it gets wet.

Recognized by multiple generations of birders and outdoors people, the Audubon bird call has been made and tuned by hand in the USA in the same way for over 60 years.

This bird call is made in the United States.
