Cynthia Main left her job running a salvage building materials wood shop at the ReBuilding Exchange in Chicago Illinois in 2013 to spend a year at Tillers International: a traditional rural skills school near Kalamazoo, Michigan. There, she was able to dive into more traditional woodworking and blacksmithing. Together with Doug Stubbs, she created Sunhouse Craft. Broom-making may have claimed her, she says, and allowing that to happen feels to her like a reclamation of sorts.

Get ready to learn to make Appalachian style hand brooms! Join Cynthia Main, author of The Handmade Broom and unlock the fun of this traditional and practical craft. You’ll learn to weave four beautiful and functional brooms with this kit.

This is a fun and accessible craft, recommended for ages 10 and up: some manual dexterity and strength pulling is required. Let’s get crafting y’all!

Here's what is included in this kit:

  • enough broomcorn to make four hand brooms
  • colored nylon thread for weaving one spool each of: black, cram, olive and red
  • optional small dowel to use as a string spool with your feet as you weave, optional stalks for weaving decorative tops
  • instructions for weaving in a 20-page 100% recycled, sewn spine booklet made by Lickety Split Press in Northern Kentucky, with photos by Christina Stallard Photography
  • a 100% recycled paper letter-pressed welcome card

The boxes are made of 100% recycled material (made in Tennessee). Further instructions for different hand brooms are available on Sunhouse Craft's YouTube channel.
