Estudio Vernís was established in the mountains of Alicante, Spain, in 2019 by Alejandra and Coke. It is a workshop that celebrates craft and the unexpectedness of wood-firing with a self-built kiln in their backyard. Every piece is made individually, by hand, in their studio in Castell de Castells and meant to be timeless, lasting, and ever-evolving honest ceramic piece. Alejandra and Coke aspire to a world where every object contains the traces of the hands that made it. That is why their fingerprints are in every step of the process, from the pinching of the clay, to the formulation of the glazes or the foraging of the wood, leaving a mark in a lasting and natural material, using primitive techniques and local resources.
Manteca, the stoneware butter dish is like a brick, one that holds your butter brick :). Do not let it fool you. It can hold treasures, too. It is chalk glazed and unglazed –naturally marked by pine ashes while wood-firing in the backyard. Both the stoneware and the glazes that Estudio Vernís use are dishwasher friendly.
Since each piece is individually handmade, measurements, form, and glaze are for guidance only. Each piece is unique and can differ in size and shape, and the shade and intrinsic pattern of the glaze can vary from piece to piece as a result of the wood-firing process. This piece will age alongside you and its look will be result of all of its experiences.
