The journey of Materia Botánica began as a research project focused on experimenting with the local plants, agricultural plant waste, and conventionally undervalued materials to extract pigments for dyeing clothing and artisanal textiles. When Almudena reached out to us, it was a true eureka moment — the thrill of connecting with such a niche, like-minded creator was palpable. For this small shop of ours, it is living the dream in its most sincere form — working with our hands from scratch, learning from nature, and sharing the quiet joy of creating respectfully.
This is a set of seven pure merino wool embroidery threads NM 2/12, corresponding to needle sizes 2.5–3. Each carved wooden spool contains approximately 5g of thread, all packed together in a hand-dyed cotton pouch. The threads are hand dyed in Materia Botánica's atelier in Galicia using agricultural discards and other botanical dyes. Their Spanish merino wool comes from a shepherds’ cooperative in Extremadura that follows the principles of extensive livestock farming. The sheep are raised in the heart of las dehesas, a protected ecosystem that blends free-range livestock farming, forestry, and wild flora and fauna, ensuring animal welfare and completely free from mulesing.
colors include: orange and green from onion skins, yellow from pomegranate skins, pink from avocado seeds, blue from indigo. Ecru and brown are the natural, undyed colors of the wool.
There may be variation in color tone or intensity from one dye bath to another, as long as the dyeing is done by hand and with plants, no two dye baths can be the same.
