Saalt started with a phone call its founder, Cherie, made to an aunt in Venezuela, where pads and tampons had not been available in stores for years. She immediately thought of her daughters and what she would do if she found herself in the same situation. The dependence she and others had on disposables kept her up at night. When she went to source a bulk order of menstrual cups, she couldn’t find one that met her ideal criteria. So she started custom designing her idea of the perfect cup. Hand sketched drawings turned into fourteen design iterations, and in February of 2018, Saalt launched with the Saalt Cup.
The name Saalt represents something that is natural and essential for our bodies. They, like us, believe the best approach to period care should be just as natural, distinct, simple, and elemental.
This menstrual cup / menskopp for teens was made in collaboration with teens to design a perfect fit for them. This is slightly smaller than the size small cup from Saalt but still offers up to 12 hours of worry-free protection. Make sure to rinse it with cold water every time you remove it and also follow up with a mild soap under hot water. Sterilize regularly.
Parents! Make sure to practice an open conversation with your daughters so they know what having a safe period means. Inserting a menstrual cup can be a learning curve. No shame, no blame, no discouragements. All of it is normal and every body is unique. Here is what the Saalt say about the teen cup:
"Using a cup or disc will require getting up close and personal with your intimate anatomy. Inserting and removing the cup or disc will require inserting your fingers into your vagina. If this is new to you, know that it can take some time to get used to, but this by no means is a reason to say no to cups! The size and shape of your hymen may impact what insertion methods will be most comfortable. It’s important to take your time when learning to use a cup or disc, and don't feel pressured to rush insertion. It's ok to take it slowly and experiment to find what works for your body.
There are many incorrect assumptions about virginity that persist. Some are about the hymen, a thin membrane that partially covers or surrounds the vaginal opening. Some myths imply that a person’s hymen will be “intact” until their first experience with sexual intercourse. This is not true. Hymen shapes naturally vary widely, and some are naturally more open than others. It is very rare for the hymen to entirely cover the vaginal opening. Over time, the hymen can stretch or tear for various reasons that aren't related to sexual activity. Some of these physical activities might include horseback riding, gymnastics, or even using tampons; using a menstrual cup or disc is unlikely to cause any considerable impact on the hymen as these products are designed to be gentle and flexible when inserted and removed."

IMPORTANT: (1) Some studies have associated IUD expulsion with menstrual cup use (menstrual discs may be a better option for those with an IUD in place because discs do not rely on suction to stay in place). (2) Menstrual discs and cups (as well as tampons) have been associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS is a rare but serious disease that may cause death. Symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) include fever, abdominal cramps, black vaginal discharge or pus, and muscle pain. Read and keep this information. If you experience these symptoms, contact your doctor right away. Learn more about TSS here.
