Cynthia Main left her job running a salvage building materials wood shop at the ReBuilding Exchange in Chicago Illinois in 2013 to spend a year at Tillers International: a traditional rural skills school near Kalamazoo, Michigan. There, she was able to dive into more traditional woodworking and blacksmithing. Together with Doug Stubbs, she created Sunhouse Craft. Broom-making may have claimed her, she says, and allowing that to happen feels to her like a reclamation of sorts.
The humble broom lives in every home but is the workhorse of the house. There’s no reason why it shouldn't be beautiful as well. The founder of Sunhouse Craft, Cynthia Main, walks you through how to make incredible, but deceptively simple, brooms, sweeps, and hand brushes. Easy enough to do at the kitchen table, and quick enough to make as gifts, you will learn the tools, techniques and materials necessary to supply your kitchen.
With beautiful step-by-step photography, and clear, insightful instructions, you’ll have everything you need to pick up a handful of broom corn and make these incredible objects for you and yours.
