This beautifully illustrated, practical guide brings plant-based dyeing into both traditional and eco-conscious contemporary practice. It suits curious beginners and dyers ready to take their craft further.
The Natural Dye Handbook revisits the fundamentals so you understand each plant and process. It then shows how tannins, mordants, modifiers and color mixing can greatly widen your palette. At its heart is a library of more than 60 dye sources, from leaves, bark and roots to flowers, fruit, nuts, seeds and fungi, along with the natural rainbow they produce. A large section on color theory teaches you to build your own color library and mix shades. Iverson presents two ways of working: a traditional, measured style and a more intuitive one.
Heidi Iverson is a textile artist and teacher in Northern California and a founding member of Fibershed (here for the Norwegian chapter). She illustrated the book herself and dyed every sample in it. She also covers how to forage safely, harvest ethically and grow your own dye plants, and how to keep a dye journal to record your progress.
